Newz Desk, Durgapur: In a bid to reduce “maths fear” among young students and make learning more engaging, the Union Ministry of Education is planning to introduce a practical, real-life–oriented mathematics curriculum for lower classes across schools.
According to official sources, the initiative will focus on teaching students from Classes I to VIII how mathematics is used in everyday life, rather than limiting the subject to abstract formulas and problem-solving. The revised approach is expected to be rolled out from the 2026–27 academic session, primarily in schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The ministry has directed the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to prepare new textbooks and learning materials aligned with this objective. Lessons will include practical examples such as calculating the correct price while shopping, understanding restaurant bills by adding food costs, GST and other charges, and managing simple household calculations.
Education ministry officials believe that maths anxiety is not restricted to CBSE students alone, but is a widespread issue affecting children across different school boards. In view of this, the Centre plans to hold discussions with state governments to explore the possibility of adopting similar reforms nationwide. A secretary-level meeting with states may be convened soon to deliberate on the proposal.
The revamped curriculum will also introduce students to India’s ancient mathematical heritage in a simplified manner, alongside fundamental concepts such as the Pythagoras theorem. The aim is to spark curiosity and build conceptual clarity from an early age, while making mathematics more relatable and enjoyable.
Officials indicated that similar reforms may later be extended to higher classes, though no final decision has been taken yet. Through this initiative, the Centre hopes to transform mathematics from a subject of fear into a tool of everyday understanding and confidence for young learners.
