Sikkim bars outside-state bikes from North and East Sikkim tourist spots

Newz Desk, Durgapur-20th August 2026: Tourists travelling from West Bengal will no longer be allowed to take their own motorcycles to several popular destinations in North and East Sikkim, following a new directive issued by the Sikkim Tourism Department on Wednesday.

Until now, restrictions were primarily applicable to vehicles from outside the state. Tourists travelling in vehicles registered in West Bengal or other states could drive up to designated points in Sikkim and then hire locally registered vehicles to visit several tourist destinations.

The Sikkim government has now decided to extend similar restrictions to motorcycles from outside the state.

According to the Tourism Department, tourists will not be permitted to take outside-state cars or motorcycles to popular destinations in North and East Sikkim, including Gurudongmar Lake, Zero Point, Lachen, Lachung, Nathula Pass, Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, Baba Mandir and Zuluk.

However, motorcycle enthusiasts can still travel to Gangtok or Mangan on their own bikes. From there, they will have to hire motorcycles registered in Sikkim to visit the restricted tourist destinations.
