SBI warns customers: Zero-Balance inoperative accounts may be closed

Newz Desk, Durgapur: The State Bank of India (SBI) has issued a public notice urging holders of inoperative regular savings bank accounts to update their Know Your Customer (KYC) details, warning that certain accounts with zero balances may be closed if the required formalities are not completed within a month.

According to the notice dated October 24, 2026, the advisory applies to regular savings bank accounts that have become inoperative due to the absence of customer-initiated transactions for the past two years.

SBI has asked affected account holders to visit any of its branches with their KYC documents or update their details through available digital channels, including Internet Banking, the YONO mobile application, ATMs and WhatsApp Banking.

The bank has specifically warned that inoperative accounts with nil balances for more than one year will be closed after one month from the date of the notice if the account holders fail to update their KYC details within the stipulated period. No further intimation will be issued before such closure, the notice states. The advisory is aimed at encouraging customers to regularise their account status and ensure that their KYC information remains updated. Account holders who have not operated their SBI savings accounts for an extended period are advised to check their account status and complete the necessary formalities within the deadline.

Customers should verify the notice and the available KYC update procedures through official SBI channels before sharing personal or banking information. They should also remain cautious of unsolicited calls or messages claiming to facilitate account reactivation or KYC updates.
