As AICTE tightens quality norms, JIS Education Expo offers career guidance to thousands of students

Newz Desk, Durgapur: At a time when the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has barred 58 engineering colleges across India from admitting first-year students for the 2026-27 academic session over quality and compliance concerns, the JIS Education Expo 2026 – Durgapur Edition highlighted the growing importance of informed career choices and access to quality higher education.

The AICTE’s decision, aimed at improving standards in technical education, has drawn attention across the education sector. The affected colleges have been restricted from admitting new students due to deficiencies in faculty strength, infrastructure and low student enrolment, although existing students will be allowed to complete their courses. AICTE has clarified that the restriction is not necessarily permanent. Institutions that successfully address deficiencies related to faculty, infrastructure and academic standards may be considered for restoration of admission approval in future academic sessions. AICTE officials indicated that low student enrolment has been a major concern. During the 2025-26 academic session, more than 900 technical courses remained non-functional due to insufficient admissions, prompting the regulatory body to tighten compliance measures. Of the 58 institutions, three are government-aided colleges, while the remaining are privately managed. The development has raised concerns among education experts, particularly as it comes during the peak admission season. However, AICTE maintains that the measure is intended to ensure that students receive quality technical education from institutions that meet the required academic and regulatory standards.

Against this backdrop, JIS Group organised its one-day Education Expo in Durgapur, bringing together students, parents, teachers and education experts from more than 130 schools across Paschim Bardhaman, Purba Bardhaman, Bankura, Birbhum, Bolpur, Dhanbad and Purulia.

Interactive counselling sessions focused on career planning, stream selection, admission procedures, emerging disciplines and industry trends. Students and parents also received guidance on choosing institutions that align with their academic goals and career aspirations, an issue that has gained added significance following AICTE’s recent action against underperforming engineering colleges.

One of the major attractions of the Expo was the felicitation of outstanding Class 10 and Class 12 students from participating schools, recognising academic excellence while motivating others to pursue higher education with confidence.

Speaking at the event, Sardar Taranjit Singh, Managing Director, JIS Group, said every student deserves access to quality education, proper guidance and opportunities that help shape a successful future. He noted that the Education Expo has evolved into a platform where students can make informed academic decisions and explore future-ready learning opportunities.
