Durgapur, May 2026: What began as an ordinary motorcycle ride turned into a near-fatal tragedy for 27-year-old Debanjon Bagdi after his bike crashed into a pole at high speed, leaving him critically injured with devastating head, facial, and eye trauma.
Debanjon was rushed to the Emergency Room (ER) of IQ City Medical College Hospital, Durgapur, in an extremely critical condition. He arrived barely conscious, bleeding profusely from his forehead, nose, face, and left eye, with multiple fractures across his skull and facial bones. Doctors described his condition as life-threatening, with survival itself uncertain.
The patient was immediately admitted under the Swastha Sathi scheme and emergency treatment was initiated without delay.
According to hospital sources, the impact of the crash caused severe injuries, including a deep forehead laceration extending down to the skull bone, fractures of the frontal skull, multiple facial bone fractures involving the left side of the nose and upper jaw, severe trauma to the left eye causing protrusion of the eyeball, and extensive bruising around the right eye. He also suffered major wounds on the left side of the face, chin, and left forearm.
At the time of arrival, the patient was unable to open his eyes on command and responded only with limited sounds, indicating serious brain involvement. Doctors in the emergency department acted swiftly to stabilize him. Facial and scalp wounds were cleaned and sutured immediately to control the bleeding. Due to heavy blood loss, an urgent blood transfusion was administered, and the patient was placed on ventilator support to preserve his life.
He was later shifted to the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the care of Dr. Navneet Kumar, MCh Neurosurgeon at IQ City Medical College Hospital. A multidisciplinary team involving specialists from Anaesthesiology, Ophthalmology, ENT Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and CTVS Surgery was assembled urgently to manage the complex nature of his injuries.
A CT scan revealed air inside the skull, fractures involving the frontal part of the skull, brain contusions with swelling and bleeding, fracture of the left eye socket with protrusion of the eyeball, and multiple fractures involving facial bones.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the medical team took up the case as a major emergency challenge and performed life-saving surgery on an urgent basis on May 18, 2026.
Under close monitoring and intensive treatment by doctors and nursing staff, Debanjon began showing signs of recovery within a few days. Hospital authorities confirmed that the patient is currently in the recovery phase and responding well to treatment.
The patient’s family members expressed deep gratitude toward the treating doctors and the entire medical team at IQ City Medical College Hospital for saving the young man’s life.
“This was a highly critical polytrauma case involving severe head injury, facial fractures, and eye trauma. Timely intervention, coordinated multidisciplinary care, and emergency surgery played a crucial role in saving the patient,” said Dr. Navneet Kumar.
The successful management of the case highlights the emergency response capabilities and multidisciplinary expertise available at IQ City Medical College Hospital, Durgapur.
