Newz Desk, Asansol: Severe tension gripped Barakar on Sunday night following a violent clash between two groups over the playing of DJ music. The incident occurred around 10 pm in the Monberia area under the Barakar outpost of Kulti police station, within the Asansol–Durgapur Police Commissionerate limits. Several people were reportedly injured in the clash.
On receiving information, a large contingent of police from Kulti police station rushed to the spot and took strict measures to bring the situation under control. While the situation is currently under control, police said tension and fear continued to prevail in the area till Monday morning.
According to local sources, picnics were being organised by two local groups near the Balunkar area adjacent to the Monberia Shiva temple. An argument broke out between the groups over the volume and playing of DJ music, which soon escalated into a physical altercation. The dispute later spread into the neighbourhood, taking a more serious turn.
As the night progressed, incidents of stone-pelting were reported, triggering panic among local residents. Alarmed by the deteriorating situation, locals informed the police. The police intervened promptly and managed to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation.
Police officials said they are identifying those involved in the violence. The injured have been provided medical treatment, and an investigation into the incident is underway. To prevent any further flare-up, additional police forces have been deployed in the area and security has been tightened.
