Newz Desk, Durgapur: Jharkhand’s political landscape has turned volatile amid reports that Chief Minister Hemant Soren may be exploring a possible shift to the NDA. Speculation intensified after Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren reportedly met a senior BJP leader in Delhi, a move seen as more than a routine courtesy call. The buzz grew further when Governor Santosh Gangwar held discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday.
If the JMM, which holds 34 seats, decides to align with the BJP’s 21 along with support from smaller parties, the total strength would reach 58—well above the 41-seat majority mark in the 81-member Assembly. Such a realignment would significantly alter Jharkhand’s power structure and could spell the end of the current Mahagathbandhan coalition, which currently has 56 seats with support from the Congress, RJD and CPI-ML.

Political analysts believe that a JMM-BJP alliance, if it materialises, would be one of the most unexpected political moves in recent years. During the 2024 election campaign, both parties were locked in an intense confrontation and Hemant Soren consistently accused the BJP of misusing ED investigations to target him and gain public sympathy. Past experiences show that the JMM-BJP partnership has historically been unstable, particularly between 2010 and 2014 when frequent withdrawals of support and power shifts created political turbulence.
Though there is no official confirmation yet, political circles remain abuzz over the potential shift.
