Newz Desk, Durgapur: In a significant push towards technology-driven road safety, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with Reliance Jio to launch a telecom-enabled warning system aimed at reducing accidents on national highways.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two sides will allow the use of Jio’s 4G and 5G network to send real-time alerts to travellers as they enter high-risk zones. According to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, the initiative will cover stretches identified as accident-prone, as well as areas frequently affected by fog, stray animals, or emergency diversions.
Mobile Alerts to the Rescue: NHAI, Jio Partner on Highway Safety Push
The system will automatically send warnings to all Jio subscribers travelling on or in the vicinity of national highways. Since the solution relies on existing mobile towers, officials said it can be rolled out rapidly without the need for new roadside infrastructure.
Calling the move a major leap in digital road-safety solutions, NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said the alert mechanism would help commuters make “informed and timely decisions” and promote safer driving behaviour. “This collaboration has the potential to redefine highway management practices in the country,” he added.
The project is expected to serve as a model for future tech-led safety measures across India’s extensive highway network.
