Newz Desk, Durgapur: Days after a woman jumped from a moving train while trying to catch two snatchers on the Dhauli Express, the Railway Police has decided to intensify its crackdown on criminals operating on trains and platforms. As part of the new measures, the Government Railway Police (GRP) is creating a centralised database of “most wanted” snatchers and repeat offenders to help different GRP units identify suspects quickly in case of a crime.
According to state police sources, the database will also include details of snatchers who are currently out on bail. The aim is to track them, arrest them at the earliest, and prevent crimes on running trains and at railway stations.
The move comes after Sunday’s shocking incident near Bhogpur station in East Midnapore. A woman passenger, returning from the train’s washroom, was attacked by two snatchers who yanked the chain from her neck. When the criminals leapt off the moving train to escape, the woman tried to stop them and jumped after them, sustaining severe injuries. She lost her right hand in the fall. Local residents, however, managed to catch the two accused.

Railway Police said that important trains already have adequate GRP personnel, supported by RPF units, to prevent such incidents. Regular arrests of suspicious snatchers are also carried out. But after the Dhuali Express case, officials are determined to tighten surveillance further and leave “no room for lapses.”
As part of the new strategy, each railway police district will prepare a list of known snatchers and other criminals operating in its area. Their current status, crime history, and movement will be tracked. This consolidated “crime map” will allow GRP units to know which offenders are active in which zone and act swiftly.
Senior officials have also instructed officers-in-charge to intensify checking on key trains. With the new system, the police aims to bring train-related crime “down to zero,” officials said.
