Newz Desk, Durgapur: Three workers, including one permanent employee, were injured on Monday afternoon after an oxygen cylinder exploded inside the Repairing Shop of the Blast Furnace division at Durgapur Steel Plant. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm during the ‘B’ shift, sparking panic among employees present at the site.
According to plant sources, the workers were engaged in dismantling a machine using an oxygen cylinder when it suddenly burst. The blast caused burn injuries to the faces and hands of the three workers—contract employees Rezzak Ali and Imran Ali, and permanent staff member Baridbaran Ghosh.
Colleagues immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the injured workers. They were first taken to the plant’s medical centre for preliminary treatment and later shifted to the main hospital of the organisation.
Employees said the blast happened without warning, leaving those standing close by—Rezzak, Imran and Baridbaran—severely shaken and partially burnt. All three are currently undergoing treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable.

DSP’s Public Relations Officer said, “A probe committee is being formed to investigate how the accident occurred. The team will examine all aspects and submit a detailed report. Further action will be taken based on the findings.”
The incident has raised fresh concerns over workplace safety inside the steel plant, prompting calls for stricter monitoring of equipment used in high-risk operations.
