Newz Desk, Durgapur: The Centre is set to roll out a digital alternative to traditional multi-line postal addresses, similar to how email IDs or UPI handles function. The Department of Posts has amended the Postal Rules, 2023, paving the way for a short virtual address code that can represent any physical address across the country.
The technology has been named Digital Hub for Reference and Unique Virtual Address (DHRUVA). Officials said the system will function as a proxy for a person’s actual address. Instead of sharing long, detailed address lines, individuals will be able to share a compact digital code.
According to officials, only authorised service providers—such as delivery companies or agencies offering home-based services—will be able to access the full physical address linked to the virtual code. This aims to ensure that personal address details are not widely shared, enhancing both privacy and security.
India Moves to Email-Style Addressing with New DHRUVA Code
The move comes amid a rapid rise in online deliveries and doorstep services, which has led to increased sharing of personal address information. By using DHRUVA, the Postal Department believes users can reduce the risk of data exposure while also simplifying address management in digital commerce.
Earlier, the Department had introduced the ‘Digi-PIN’, a modern upgrade to the traditional PIN code system. The new proxy-address technology takes that concept further by linking each physical address to a unique digital identifier.
Officials claim that DHRUVA could streamline logistics, improve accuracy in last-mile delivery, and strengthen confidentiality for users across urban and rural regions.
