Newz Desk, Durgapur: Food Safety Department has stepped up its crackdown on substandard and stale food, conducting inspections at several shops and food establishments across Durgapur from Bhringi to Benachity.
During the drive, officials inspected the quality of food being sold, storage practices and hygiene standards at the establishments. In several shops, officials reportedly found stale food stored inside refrigerators for prolonged periods, raising concerns over food safety and public health. The officials ordered the shop owners not to sell the stale food and had the items discarded at the establishments. Shop owners and employees were also cautioned to follow proper hygiene and food-storage practices while handling and selling food products.
Food Safety Department officials made it clear that there would be no compromise with public health. They said surveillance would be intensified to ensure that stale, rotten or substandard food does not reach consumers. Officials further warned that establishments found deliberately storing or attempting to sell stale or rotten food could face stricter action in the future. Similar inspection drives are expected to continue across the city. The enforcement drive reportedly caused concern among several food business operators. However, many residents welcomed the initiative, saying that regular inspections are essential to ensure food quality, cleanliness and hygiene at shops and eateries.
The latest drive is part of the administration’s wider efforts to strengthen food safety monitoring and protect consumers from potentially unsafe food.
