Celebrating Tagore’s Spirit and Uday Shankar’s Legacy Through Dance

Newz Desk, Kolkata: Prabaha Kalabhoomi, an institute devoted to the promotion of Indian cultural arts, hosted “Creativity Confluence: An Academic Session Exploring Tagore through Indian Dance Forms” at Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, on Wednesday, offering a rich blend of movement, philosophy and scholarship.

Organised in the run-up to the 125th birth anniversary of legendary dance visionary Sri Uday Shankar, the session highlighted dance as a way of being rather than mere performance, with a special focus on Rabindranath Tagore’s artistic and philosophical vision.

The programme began at 4.30 pm with a Ganesha Vandana, followed by a spellbinding performance by Natyasri Smt. Debjani Chatterjee, founder of Prabaha Kalabhoomi. Eminent artistes and scholars including Padma Shri Smt. Mamata Shankar, Sri Ashimbandhu Bhattacharya, Sri Somnath Kutty, Sri Soumit Kutty and Jonaki Sarkar shared insights into Tagore’s dance-dramas and his enduring influence on Indian performing arts through lectures, discussions and audio-visual presentations.

Interactive sessions and short performances kept the audience engaged, underlining dance as a philosophical, spiritual and meditative practice. Open to all, the workshop drew art and dance enthusiasts from across the city and concluded at 8 pm, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation of dance as a transformative art form.

The programme was supported by media partner 91.9 Friends FM.
