Newz Desk, Durgapur: To ease traffic congestion and help commuters plan their travel better, Siliguri Metropolitan Police has rolled out a dedicated traffic bulletin service across multiple platforms, including All India Radio’s local station, FM channels, and social media. The initiative came into effect on Monday.
Police commissioner C. Sudhakar has directed that traffic updates be issued twice daily to keep residents and visitors informed about road conditions, diversions, and congestion-prone zones.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Quazi Samsuddin Ahmed, said the bulletins will be released every day at 8am and 4pm. “Our aim is to provide real-time information on traffic movement so that people can plan their journeys accordingly. Updates will be shared through social media, AIR Siliguri, and FM radio stations to reach the widest number of commuters,” Ahmed said.
He added that any sudden or major disruptions in traffic flow—due to accidents, breakdowns, VIP movement, or weather-related issues—will be communicated immediately through additional alerts.

Siliguri, often called the gateway to the Northeast, handles thousands of travellers daily through key transit points such as New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station, Siliguri Junction, Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus, and Bagdogra airport. Heavy tourist influx combined with commercial transport often creates bottlenecks across the city.
Welcoming the police initiative, Samrat Sanyal, general secretary of the Himalayan Hospitality & Tourism Development Network, said, “This step is timely and extremely useful. Tourists and service providers can now plan their travel better, avoid congested routes, and adjust schedules based on the updates.”
Authorities believe that the regular bulletins will significantly improve traffic management and reduce commuter inconvenience, especially during peak tourist seasons.
