Newz Desk, Durgapur: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched a new Mobile Number Validation (MNV) platform aimed at tightening identity verification and curbing misuse of mobile numbers in financial and digital services. The platform enables instant verification of any mobile number by directly routing the request to the concerned telecom operator.
According to officials, when a mobile number is entered into the MNV system, the information is automatically sent to the respective telecom operator, which conducts a thorough check and then updates the verified details back into the platform. This mechanism will help banks and various service providers confirm whether a mobile number truly belongs to the person availing a particular service.
The move is expected to reduce frauds involving mule accounts, where individuals use someone else’s mobile number to open bank accounts or access services.
Under the new rules, anyone selling an old mobile phone will also be able to verify the handset’s IMEI number through the telecom operator’s platform. The DoT has created a centralised database of blacklisted phones; if the IMEI number of a phone appears in this list, it indicates that the device’s sale is illegal.
Additionally, the government has mandated telecom companies to share mobile-related information with authorities under the Telecom Identifier User Entity framework to strengthen monitoring and compliance.
Individuals can also visit the Sanchar Saathi portal to check how many SIM cards have been issued in their name, helping them identify and report unauthorised mobile connections.
The introduction of the MNV platform is expected to enhance security, improve transparency and boost trust in digital transactions across sectors.
