Newz Desk, Burdwan: Cardiac disease remains one of the leading health concerns in India, and access to advanced treatment is often limited outside metropolitan cities. Against this backdrop, Manipal Hospitals, one of India’s largest healthcare networks, highlighted its latest advancements in cardiac sciences while announcing the transition of Medica Superspecialty Hospital into Manipal Hospital EM Bypass at a press conference in Burdwan.
The session was addressed by Dr Kunal Sarkar, director, cardiovascular & thoracic surgery, Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur Cluster, who spoke about how the integration would enhance patient-centric cardiac care in the region.
This follows Medica’s integration with Manipal Hospitals last year, making it the largest hospital group in Eastern India. The rebranding of Medica’s hospitals in Kolkata, Ranchi, Siliguri, and Rangapani has been completed, reflecting Manipal’s vision to deliver advanced tertiary and quaternary care to underserved regions in Eastern India.
Manipal Hospitals operates 38 hospitals across 19 cities in India, with more than 10,500 beds and more than 7,200 doctors. Its seven hospitals in Eastern India — five in Kolkata (EM Bypass, Mukundapur, Dhakuria, Broadway, and Saltlake) and two in Siliguri — offer 1,200 beds, more than 450 ICU beds, seven Cath Labs, and over 1,100 doctors, ensuring quality healthcare is accessible across the region.
‘Trendsetting’ milestones in cardiac sciences
Speaking to journalists, Dr Kunal Sarkar emphasised Manipal Hospitals’ role as a “trendsetter” in cardiac care, citing milestones such as Eastern India’s first wireless pacemaker injectable AI procedure, over 50 TEVAR procedures, and advanced interventions like TAVI, CSP implantations, and Bachmann’s Bundle Pacing pioneered at the EM Bypass unit (erstwhile Medica).

Excellence in cardiology is not merely the successful procedure but also the intensive care ecosystem that envelops the patient, Dr Sarkar said. “Awareness, timely action, and access to specialised care create the difference between life and death in heart disease. With Medica now being part of Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, patients will benefit from seamless access to cutting-edge technology, multidisciplinary expertise, and a national network of specialists—ensuring that every treatment is patient-focused and outcome-driven. Our cardiac sciences program has been conceptualised to provide seamless, patient-focused care at each level of treatment,” he said.
Extending advanced cardiac care across Eastern India
Manipal Hospitals’ Cardiac Intensive Care Units (CICUs) are equipped to manage complex emergencies with 24×7 monitoring. Minimally invasive, pain-free procedures accelerate recovery and shorten hospital stays. The hospitals also lead in identifying unusual symptoms of heart disease, particularly among women and young patients, where warning signs are less evident. The program depends on close multidisciplinary partnerships among cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, intensivists, and highly skilled nursing staff to deliver the best quality of care.
Through such initiatives, Manipal Hospitals extends its reach further into Eastern India, ensuring that patients from Burdwan and beyond can access world-class treatment at the earliest. The conference reiterated the hospital’s mission of bringing healthcare closer, smarter, and more patient-centric—because every heartbeat counts.
