Kashmir’s Iconic Saffron in Crisis: Farmers Report Only 10% Harvest

Newz Desk, Durgapur: Kashmir’s iconic saffron industry has suffered a major setback this year, with production plunging to just 10 per cent of normal levels. Farmers in Pampore, the main saffron-growing region, say erratic temperatures and prolonged dryness have crippled yield for the second consecutive year.

Abdul Majid Wani, president of the Saffron Growers Association, said the unusually cold and dry weather from late October through November severely affected saffron corms. Experts warn that if the climate remains unstable, production could fall even further next year.

Saffron researcher Prof. S.A. Dar stressed the urgent need for artificial irrigation, calling it the only reliable solution under the changing climate. Agriculture department officials claim irrigation measures have begun, though many farmers remain sceptical.

Grower Ijaz Ahmed Khan said the government must act swiftly to protect Kashmir’s centuries-old saffron tradition, which is now under serious threat.
