Hearing in Durgapur Medical Student Assault Case Deferred to Thursday, Why?

Newz Desk, Durgapur: The special court hearing the Durgapur medical student assault case on Tuesday deferred proceedings, scheduling the next hearing for Thursday. The decision came just days after the court began recording witness statements.

Charges in the case were framed on November 10, and the trial commenced on November 19 at the special court. On the first two days of the trial, the court recorded the testimony of Second ACJM Judge Rajib Sarkar, under whose jurisdiction the case had initially begun before being shifted to the special court.

The case concerns the alleged assault of a medical student from Odisha on the night of October 10. Following an investigation, police arrested seven accused from various locations, including Firdous Sheikh, Riazuddin Sheikh, Apu Bauri, Nasiruddin Sheikh, Shafik Sheikh, and the victim’s classmate, Wasif Ali from Silampur, Malda.

Remarkably, the police filed the chargesheet within just 20 days of the complaint.

Two of the accused — Riazuddin Sheikh and Shafik Sheikh — had earlier given confidential statements before a magistrate. Although proceedings had begun to make them approvers in the case, both later withdrew their willingness and declined to turn state witnesses.

With key testimonies underway, the case is expected to see significant developments in the upcoming hearings.
