Disabled youth hacked to death in Durgapur, One detained

Newz Desk, Durgapur: A 35-year-old disabled man was allegedly hacked with a sharp weapon in the early hours of Saturday, leading to his death from severe blood loss. The incident triggered tension in the Raturia area under the jurisdiction of Coke Oven police station in Durgapur.

The deceased has been identified as Sheikh Ashraf (35), a resident of the area. According to the family, an altercation broke out in the locality during the early hours of Saturday following an alleged dispute involving a man identified as Hossain.

Family members alleged that Hossain had frequently misbehaved with and harassed local residents. They claimed that during Saturday’s altercation, Hossain allegedly attacked Ashraf and struck him with a sharp weapon. Ashraf sustained serious injuries and collapsed in a pool of blood. The incident quickly spread through the locality, creating panic among residents. Police from Coke Oven police station reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Hossain was reportedly detained by the police in connection with the incident.

Ashraf was rescued in a critical condition and taken to Durgapur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Tension reportedly prevailed in the area following the incident. Police are investigating the exact circumstances that led to the attack and whether any previous dispute was behind the alleged assault. Ashraf’s family described him as a quiet and peace-loving person who, despite being disabled, maintained cordial relations with people in the locality. His daughter-in-law, Gulshan Begum, said, “Ashraf was a very good person. He was disabled but never misbehaved with anyone in the locality. The man named Hossain used to misbehave with people. We want him to be punished.”

Police have started a detailed investigation. Officers are looking into whether the weapon allegedly used in the attack has been recovered, what exactly triggered the assault and whether anyone else was involved in the incident.
