Newz Desk, Durgapur: A national survey has revealed that 80% of persons with physical disabilities in India do not have health insurance, and 53% of applicants were denied policies. Conducted by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment, the study covered 5,000 individuals across 34 states.
The report says insurers often reject applicants citing their physical conditions. Those denied coverage include people with thalassemia and autism. The organisation alleges that such refusals violate constitutional rights and disregard IRDAI guidelines.
Even those who secure insurance face steep premiums, making continuation difficult. The survey also highlights low awareness of rights among persons with disabilities.
At the report’s release, Manmeet Nanda, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, stressed the need for assistive technologies and stronger inter-ministerial coordination to address the issue.
