Newz Desk, Durgapur : The authorities of Gengara Primary School in Purulia have taken the initiative to help students develop an understanding of banking and financial literacy from the primary level itself. On the occasion of Children’s Day, the Kalpataru Children’s Bank, operated by the school’s Children’s Council, was formally inaugurated.
The young students of the village can now come to school and purchase necessary notebooks, pencils, and study materials using a passbook issued by the bank. Sujoy Basu, AI of the Purulia District Primary School Council, claimed that by launching this innovative bank—the first of its kind in the state—the school will set an example for other primary schools. He believes that apart from primary textbook learning, children will now gain a basic understanding of banks and their services from an early age.
Head teacher Dipak Kumar Chakraborty said that to ensure children’s rights and educational development, promote hands-on mathematical learning, nurture honesty, prevent wastage of money, encourage saving habits, create a joyful learning environment, support the overall development of underprivileged children, ensure regular attendance, and build a primary understanding of the banking system— the Kalpataru Children’s Bank has been set up within the school. Along with this, a mathematics training center named Shakuntala Devi Pathshala, after human computer Shakuntala Devi, has also been established.
