Newz Desk, Durgapur: The number of wards under the Durgapur Municipal Corporation (DMC) is set to increase from 43 to 53, following a fresh notification issued by the state Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department on August 31.
According to the government notification, the state has decided to undertake a fresh delimitation of wards within the Durgapur Municipal Corporation area. Population, population density, geographical considerations, historical significance of areas and financial factors have been taken into account while determining the revised number of wards.
The addition of 10 wards is expected to bring significant changes to Durgapur’s municipal and administrative structure. The exact areas that will fall under the newly created wards, their boundaries and the impact of the delimitation on civic services and political equations are likely to remain key points of discussion in the coming days. According to administrative sources, of the 10 additional wards, four will be added to the Durgapur East Assembly constituency, while the remaining six will fall under Durgapur West.
The Durgapur Municipal Corporation comprises two Assembly constituencies, Durgapur East and Durgapur West. In the previous Assembly election, one of the constituencies was held by the Trinamool Congress while the other was represented by the BJP. In the 2026 Assembly election, the BJP won both seats, changing the political landscape of the region.
The revised ward structure is expected to have implications not only for civic administration but also for political representation. The creation of additional wards could lead to new political calculations as parties prepare for the next municipal election. The last election to the Durgapur Municipal Corporation was held on August 13, 2017. The elected board completed its term in 2022, but elections were not held thereafter under the then Trinamool Congress government. Instead, the civic body was run through an administrative board headed by Anindita Mukherjee.
After the BJP-led government came to power in the state, the administrative board was dissolved and an administrator was appointed by the government to oversee the functioning of the civic body.
The BJP has already been demanding that elections to the Durgapur Municipal Corporation be held at the earliest. With the state government now issuing the notification for increasing and reorganising the wards, political circles believe the civic body has moved another step closer to holding long-pending municipal elections.
Political parties across the spectrum have welcomed the ward reorganisation. The next stage is expected to focus on the detailed delimitation of ward boundaries and identification of the areas that will constitute each of the 53 wards.
The revised structure is also expected to expand the administrative reach of the civic body and create new challenges as well as opportunities in delivering municipal services, improving infrastructure and ensuring representation across the growing urban population of Durgapur.
