Aging ECL water tank crashes down, sparks safety concerns

Newz Desk, Durgapur: Two workers of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) sustained minor injuries after a water tank, believed to have been built in the 1970s, collapsed at the Shyamsundarpur Colliery on Tuesday, triggering panic in the area.

The injured, Sangeeta Devi (50) and Prabhati Bhuiya (50), were admitted to a private nursing home in Durgapur. Their condition is reported to be stable.

The collapse came after several days of heavy rainfall, prompting trade union leaders from different political parties to allege negligence on the part of ECL. They demanded an immediate inquiry, claiming the ageing structure had not been properly maintained and warning that a far more serious accident could have occurred.

The collapsed tank reportedly supplied water to more than 1,000 families, raising fears of a severe water shortage in the locality. Residents and labour leaders have urged ECL to restore the water supply quickly and conduct a safety audit of other ageing structures in its mining areas.
