Newz Desk, Durgapur: The West Bengal government has issued an appeal to vehicle owners across the state to clear their outstanding motor vehicle tax dues and ensure that their vehicles remain compliant with the applicable regulations.
According to the government advisory, Tax Defaulter Notices will start being issued from September 7, 2026 to vehicle owners who have outstanding motor vehicle tax dues. The authorities have urged defaulters to clear their dues at the earliest through the VAHAN portal or by visiting their nearest Regional Transport Office (RTO) or Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO).
The government has warned that vehicle owners who fail to clear their dues could face restrictions on their vehicle-related transactions. If the outstanding tax remains unpaid for three months from the date of issuance of the defaulter notice, the vehicle will be marked “NOT TO BE TRANSACTED” until the dues are cleared. The action will be taken in accordance with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Notification No. RT-11036/09/2023-MVL dated April 3, 2023.
The advisory is aimed at encouraging vehicle owners to regularise their tax status before enforcement measures begin. The government has appealed to vehicle owners not to wait until enforcement action is initiated and instead clear their outstanding dues and keep their vehicle records updated. The authorities have also emphasised that timely payment of motor vehicle tax is not only a legal obligation but also contributes to the development and maintenance of public infrastructure.
With the deadline for enforcement action approaching, vehicle owners with pending tax liabilities have been advised to check their dues and take necessary steps to avoid restrictions on future transactions involving their vehicles.
