WB Govt to Sell Omega-3 Enriched Brown Eggs at Budget Price

In a move aimed at providing nutritious food at affordable prices, the West Bengal Animal Resources Development Department is set to launch a special variety of eggs enriched with Omega-3 fatty acids and carotene. These premium “brown eggs”, known for their golden-yellow yolk and high nutritional value, will be sold under the Haringhata brand at a price lower than similar products currently available in the market.

The new product will be available within the next few days across the 700 outlets of the West Bengal Livestock Development Corporation. The eggs will come in semi-container style six-piece packs, designed to ensure better safety and easy transport.

The announcement comes at a time when egg prices in the open market have surged to nearly ₹8 per piece with the onset of winter, triggering widespread consumer concern. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on Tuesday criticised the sudden price rise, attributing it to the increased cost of poultry feed imported from other states—even though West Bengal itself supplies eggs to more than a dozen states.

According to officials of the Animal Resources Development Department, the decision to introduce nutrient-rich eggs stems from the state government’s commitment to ensuring better public health. The Omega-3-enriched eggs—often called brown eggs—are believed to help reduce triglyceride levels, regulate cholesterol, and support heart and liver health. They are also rich in vitamin D3 and vitamin A, offering additional benefits for the skin and eyes.

Officials said the new product will be priced ₹15 to ₹20 cheaper per pack compared to similar Omega-3 eggs available in the market. “Our aim is to provide high-quality, nutrient-rich animal protein to consumers at affordable prices,” a board member said. “Just as Haringhata has been selling regular eggs at lower-than-market rates, these Omega-3 eggs will also be competitively priced.”

Currently, regular eggs sell in local markets for ₹7.50 to ₹8 per piece, while Haringhata eggs are available at government outlets for under ₹7. The upcoming Omega-3 eggs are expected to cost around ₹10 per piece, offering a healthier alternative at a reduced price.
