High drama in Asansol as railway officials clear illegal land encroachments

Newz Desk, Asansol: Tensions flared in Asansol on Monday morning as railway authorities moved to clear shopkeepers occupying land in front of Eastern Railway School on GT Road in the Asansol Bazar area. Overseeing the removal of illegal encroachment drive were officials from Eastern Railway Asansol Division, in the presence of RPF jawans.

On receipt of the anti-encroachments drive news, local Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) leaders Raju Ahluwalia and Pintu Gupta rushed to the spot. Raju questioned the railway officials and RPF officers about the eviction.

Railway officials defended the anti-encroachments drive, insisting the land belonged to the railway. A heated exchange ensued between INTTUC leaders Raju Ahluwalia and Pintu Gupta and railway officials and officers of the Railway Protection Force. The officials maintained they were acting on formal orders, while Raju Ahluwalia countered that he would escalate the matter to higher authorities. He argued that the shopkeepers’ documents should be reviewed before any eviction could proceed.
