Cash Now, Job Later- A Sign of Changing Priorities?

Newz Desk, Durgapur: Under the recently announced Yuva Sathi scheme, the state government has proposed financial assistance for five years to those who have passed the Madhyamik examination. Officials said a large number of applications are being submitted daily at various camps.

A private organisation in the Bhanga Kuti area of the town had recently scheduled interviews to recruit employees. According to the organisation, several candidates who had earlier submitted their resumes were contacted last Friday and asked to appear for interviews on Saturday. However, a significant number of them reportedly declined, citing their commitment to attend a camp for filling up forms under the state government’s Yuva Sathi or unemployment allowance scheme on the same day. Some even requested the company to reschedule the interview. The episode has raised concerns in academic circles about whether there is a deeper shift in the mindset of the younger generation.

50 Lakh and Counting: Yuva Sathi Numbers Spark Political Debate

The number of applicants under the state government’s ‘Yuva Sathi’ unemployment allowance scheme has crossed 50 lakh within just five days of the launch of the offline application process, according to administrative sources. The offline application window opened on February 15 and remained available daily from 7 am to 9 pm. By Friday, officials said the total number of applications had already surpassed the 50 lakh mark.

National award-winning headmaster Subir Kumar De said that a private company interview offers only a possibility of employment through competition, with no guarantee of selection. In contrast, a government allowance under a notified scheme assures financial support without a competitive process. “Job interviews may come again, but the dates for applying to a government scheme are fixed. That may have influenced their decision,” he observed.

Educators, however, see a more complex issue. A college teacher in the district noted that many students lack confidence due to gaps in skill-based education and practical training. As a result, they may hesitate to face competitive environments like job interviews. “A guaranteed allowance feels like a safer option,” she explained.
