Newz Desk, Durgapur: Commuters crossing Vidyasagar Setu can now stay connected without interruptions, as Bharti Airtel becomes the first telecom operator to deliver seamless mobile connectivity across the iconic Second Hooghly Bridge. The development marks a significant boost to digital infrastructure on one of eastern India’s busiest transport corridors.
Vidyasagar Setu serves as a vital link between Kolkata and Howrah, carrying thousands of vehicles and daily commuters. With Airtel’s latest deployment, users can now experience uninterrupted voice calls and high-speed data services throughout the entire stretch of the bridge, eliminating long-standing connectivity gaps.
The project is part of Airtel’s larger network expansion across West Bengal, where the company has rolled out over 5,250 new network sites in the last three years. This sustained investment has translated into stronger coverage, faster data speeds, and a more reliable network experience for customers across urban and semi-urban areas.
To ensure consistent coverage on the bridge, Airtel laid 1.3 kilometers of fibre and installed network antennas on six strategically placed poles, creating a zero-drop zone even in a technically challenging environment like the Hooghly river crossing. The deployment was executed in close coordination with the Government of West Bengal, including the Public Works Department, West Bengal Police Traffic Department, and the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners.
Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel for West Bengal and Odisha, said the initiative reflects Airtel’s focus on building smart and resilient urban infrastructure. He noted that uninterrupted connectivity on Vidyasagar Setu is crucial not only for commuters, but also for emergency response, traffic monitoring, and public safety.
Officials from the West Bengal Government also welcomed the initiative, pointing out that reliable mobile connectivity significantly improves the daily commuting experience. Access to real-time navigation, digital services, and emergency communication enhances both convenience and safety for thousands who rely on the bridge every day.
With the successful rollout on Vidyasagar Setu, Airtel continues to strengthen its presence across key public infrastructure in West Bengal, reinforcing its commitment to building future-ready networks that support the region’s growing digital needs.
